Meet Our Team

Board and Staff

We have a small paid staff (3 full-time, 3 part-time) and a battalion of passionate volunteers. Our volunteers run the gamut from individuals with some form of autism, to family members of individuals with autism, to those who simply have a heart to serve this community.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Autism Tennessee is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors that oversees the finances and strategic development of the organization. Our board consists of:

Our Staff

  • Babs Tierno, M.Ed. –  Executive Director

    Babs has Bachelor degrees in Psychology, Sociology, Criminal Justice, and Interdisciplinary Legal Studies from The University of Tennessee, Knoxville and her Master’s degree in Education from Middle Tennessee State University. Babs has several years of non-profit experience. Previously, she worked for the Tennessee Justice Center, a non-profit that advocates for Tennessee families to get needed healthcare. Prior to this, she was the Program Director for Williamson County CASA which advocates for abused and neglected children. Babs experience with autism is personal. Her oldest son, now 6, was diagnosed at the age of two. Babs lives in Gallatin with her husband, two sons. and dogs  Stella, Mason & Dixon. Babs 2

  • Carolyn Shindler – Director of Information & Referral

    Carolyn is originally from Philadelphia but has lived all over the country. In her words, she had “a few lives” before coming to Autism Tennessee in 1998, including various jobs in the country music radio industry and owning her own record promotions business. Carolyn and her husband, Bruce, live in Kingston Springs with their son, Josh, 23, who has an autism spectrum disorder and is currently looking for work. The family also includes two dogs, two cats, and a lizard. In 2013, Carolyn celebrated her 15-year anniversary with Autism Tennessee! carolyn

  • Lisa Cloud – Director of Education & Outreach

    Lisa graduated from Purdue University with a BA in Elementary Education. She spent seven years teaching in inner-city Memphis & Nashville before staying home with her two children. Through the years, she has spent her time advocating for children and animals. She volunteered for four years as a Court Appointed Special Advocate working with abused and neglected children and nine years as an aid in Williamson County Schools working with children with disabilities. In addition, she leads Program Advancement for Snooty Giggles Dog Rescue. Lisa lives in Brentwood with her husband and two children as well as 4 dogs, 1 cat, and countless foster dogs as they wait for their forever homes.   

  • Sheila Shapley – Office Manager

    Sheila grew up in Jacksonville, FL. She received her B.A. in Leadership & Ethics and Bible from Southern Methodist College. She lived in South Carolina for 30 years prior to moving to Tennessee in 2007. She and her husband Dan have been married for over 40 years. They have four grown and married children and nine grandchildren- 7 boys and 2 girls.
