Adaptive/Assistive Equipment for Communication

Adaptive equipment used to enhance communication in children with Autism.

The families will receive information on types of AT equipment, how they are used, and how to obtain funding for equipment. The facilitator will bring a variety of demo equipment for families to look at and learn about. There will also be time for more open discussion/specific questions the guests may have.

Lori Meggs M.S., CCC-SLP is the coordinator of the AAC equipment division of Independence on Wheels in Brentwood, TN. She graduated with her bachelor’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology from Tennessee State University in Nashville. She then moved to Knoxville, Tennessee and earned her master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. While earning her graduate degree, Lori worked in an early intervention language clinic and graduated with a concentration in Autism. She is a member of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) and is licensed by both the Board of Allied Health and the State Education Department. Lori specializes in augmentative alternative communication, oral motor disorders, swallowing/feeding disorders, sensory processing disorders, and language delay/disorders. She has worked with adults and children with a variety of disorders in the medical field as a speech/language/feeding therapist in the home health, hospital, outpatient clinic, and public school setting. She has a passion for finding a “voice” for her patient’s through augmentative alternative communication.

Workshops are free to Autism Tennessee members; non-members pay $5/family at the door. Enrollment is limited; reservations are requested. Childcare is available with 48 hours advance notice. All community members are welcome.
