This is the first session of a 3-part series on Transition Planning. In Session 1 parents/caregivers and teachers will learn about transition planning for students moving from early intervention services (TEIS) to school-based services.

Session 1 - Learning Objectives:

1) Participants will identify best practices related to the transition from early intervention to school-based services.

2) Participants will recognize the steps in the transition process from early intervention to school-based services.

3) Participants will locate resources that may support caregivers as they make decisions regarding their child’s transition from early intervention to school-based services.

Presenters:

Mary Fleck, Associate Director of Early Intervention at Vanderbilt Kennedy Center TRIAD.  Mary is a behavior analyst and educator by training and has 19 years of experience in early intervention and Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) as a teacher, direct service provider, supervisor, and consultant. Mary is currently a Senior Behavior Analyst and an Associate Director of Early Intervention at TRIAD, the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center’s autism institute. In this role, Mary co-leads the early intervention team in providing state-wide support regarding evidence-based intervention for autism to caregivers and providers through a partnership with the Tennessee Early Intervention System (TEIS). This partnership includes providing individual supports to children and families through caregiver training and a range of professional development and coaching to early intervention providers. Mary holds a Masters degree from the University of New Orleans in Special Education with an emphasis in early intervention and a Bachelors degree in Psychology. Prior to her current position at Vanderbilt, Mary was an infant/toddler teacher at an inclusive preschool. Mary has also worked previously as a developmental therapist in West TN.


Nancy Goins, Senior Technical Assistance Specialist at AnLar. Nancy brings her passion for early childhood education and building communities to her work at AnLar. She is a skilled facilitator, trainer, technical assistance provider, coach, and life-long learner. She has expertise in early childhood education, early intervention, preschool special education, Pyramid Model, Infant Mental Health, inclusion, and communities of practice.  Before joining AnLar, Nancy was the Training and Technical Assistance (T&TA) Manager for Michigan for 10 years. In that role, she ensured the development and implementation of the comprehensive system of professional development for Michigan's early intervention and preschool special education systems. She was actively involved in many state initiatives such as the Part C State Systemic Improvement Plan (SSIP), Preschool Inclusion workgroup, and the Kindergarten to Third Grade Components of Quality.  She was the aRPy Ambassador for Michigan to promote the use of the Division for Early Childhood (DEC) Recommended Practices throughout Michigan.  Nancy obtained her Masters from Michigan State University in Family Studies and her Bachelors of Applied Arts from Central Michigan University in Child Development, Business and Psychology. She received a Certification in Fund Raising Management in 2011 and a Infant Mental Health Mentor-Policy endorsement in 2019. She is the co-author of the book, ‘Growing Together: Developing and Sustaining a Community of Practice in Early Childhood’, published by Gryphon House in the fall of 2019.


Kathleen Simcoe, Associate Director of Early Intervention at Vanderbilt Kennedy Center TRIAD. Kathleen is a behavior analyst and educator by training and has 15 years of experience in special education and Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) as a teacher, direct service provider, supervisor, and consultant. Kathleen is currently a Senior Behavior Analyst and an Associate Director of Early Intervention at TRIAD, the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center’s autism institute. In this role, Kathleen co-leads the early intervention team in providing state-wide support regarding evidence-based intervention for autism to caregivers and providers through a partnership with the Tennessee Early Intervention System (TEIS). This partnership includes providing individual supports to children and families through caregiver training and a range of professional development and coaching to early intervention providers. Kathleen also provides direct ABA services to children through the Tadpole Clinic at Vanderbilt. Kathleen holds a Masters degree from Vanderbilt University in Special Education and a Bachelors degree in Special Education and Spanish. Prior to her current position at Vanderbilt, Kathleen was a regional director managing multiple clinic locations for a large therapy company in another state. Kathleen has also worked previously as a special education teacher in Middle Tennessee.
