This presentation will provide parents/caregivers with information on how Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) principles can be used to create an environment that encourages communication in individuals with autism spectrum disorders. The presentation will also discuss how different ABA techniques can be used to encourage communication amd how it can benefit individuals in various settings.

Learning Objectives:

  1. To introduce the concept of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and its relevance in fostering communication skills in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
  2. To discuss the inportance of creating a structured environment to encourage communication in individuals with ASD.
  3. To explain how positive reinforcement can be used to shape communication behavior.
  4. To provide examples of how ABA principles can be applied in different settings to encourage communication.
  5. To encourage attendees to consider the use of ABA principles in creating a structured environment that encourages communication in their respective settings.

Presenter

Ada Winford, M.Ed., Modified Curriculum District Instructional Coach with Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS). She earned her undergraduate degree in special education from Florida International University, and has a graduate degree from Arkansas State University in Curriculum and Instruction. Ada has been an exceptional education educator for approximately 32 years. Her first six years were in Miami, Florida as a special educator and interdisciplinary team leader for Dade County’s middle school exceptional education staff. She has experience working with children with autism and related disorders from pre-school to high school grades. She was also the lead of an autism team that supported the needs of children in Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools’ low incidence programs, and currently serves as a lead teacher for MNPS’ low incidence program.She has won the Coston Education Award, and has worked with TRIAD and the community outreach program assisting Latino families access resources and support. She has had the privilege of being invited to speak on autism and supports for students with significant cognitive delays nationwide and state conference such as CEC and Urban Collaborative.
