Spectrum Chats: Addressing Racial Disparities in Accessing Autism Services

Autism spectrum disorders knows no racial or ethnic boundaries, however access to services and supports differs significantly depending on race, and other socioeconomic factors. Our presenters expand on the root causes of the disparities, and explore strategies that can help eliminate or reduce them.

Why It Matters:

Racial disparities in accessing autism services negatively impacts the individuals and families who need these services. When we acknowledge that these disparities exist, we can work together to ensure that everyone, regardless of their racial or socioeconomic background, have equal access to the services and supports they need.

Presenter

 Theodora Phea Pinnock's, MD serves as Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Meharry Medical College where she teaches and trains medical students and residents, and provides developmental and behavioral assessments and treatment. In 2018, she became the Assistant Dean of Admissions. In 2019, she became Associate Dean of Student Affairs and Admissions, where she oversees medical school admissions and assists student with non-academic issue.

Dr. Weitlauf is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist and Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. She is an expert in autism diagnosis and has been an investigator on many federally funded studies focused on providing better autism care.
