Event Description: 

During puberty, teens experience changes in their bodies and may start to experience sexual and romantic urges. These changes can be tough for any teen, but for kids on the autism spectrum and their families, this time can be particularly challenging. 

The Spectrum Experience and Puberty & Sexuality will help families learn what to expect when their loved one on the spectrum reaches puberty and how to help their adolescents through this period of change.


Presented by:

Theodora Pinnock, M.D. was a National Merit Scholarship winner and received her B.A. from Rice University in Houston, Texas, and her Doctor of Medicine from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. She completed a pediatric residency program at Washington University School of Medicine’s St. Louis Children’s Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. She completed a post-residency fellowship in Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. From 1992-1997, Dr. Pinnock served as Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the Vanderbilt University Medical School in its child development division. From 1997-2003, she was Vice President and provided research and training for a technical management company. From 2003-2009, she served as State Director of Maternal and Child Health for Tennessee’s Department of Health. From 2009-2013, she was in private practice in Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics.

Dr. Pinnock currently serves as Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Meharry Medical College where she teaches and trains medical students and residents and provides developmental and behavioral assessments and treatment. In addition, she recently became the Assistant Dean of Admissions and is responsible for the admission of students to the School of Medicine.   

Presentation Goal: 

Participants will learn more about growth, development, hygiene, health, and sexuality from an Autism Tennessee Provider Member expert.
